RAV-484 Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) Course

Course Description

Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) is developed by the U.S. Department of Defense, Defense Health Agency (DHA) Joint Trauma System (JTS) to teach evidence-based, life-saving techniques and strategies for providing the best trauma care on the battlefield. Raven Medical conducts TCCC courses as specified by the DHA-JTS. Emphasis is on immediate reaction to all types of injuries and accidents. Primary and secondary survey and identifying life threatening injuries and conditions with immediate actions being taken to correct the conditions are covered. The student will be proficient in managing chest wounds/injuries, severe bleeding, airway obstruction and one-man CPR. The student will also become proficient in splinting fractures/dislocations, bandaging wounds/injuries and knowledgeable in transportation techniques. This course is designed for the student to better recognize possible trauma injuries due to mechanism of injury, better assess the patient and more aggressively treat shock and trauma in general (Combined course library, 2024; NAEMT, 2024).

Course Options

• All Service Members: TCCC All Service Members (TCCC ASM) is a 7-hour course for all service members that teaches TCCC concepts and lifesaving skills to render basic medical aid to a trauma casualty (NAEMT, 2024). This course was developed by the US Department of Defense to provide evidence-based, lifesaving techniques and strategies for providing the best trau9ma care on the battlefield (Deployed Medicine, 2024). The target audience is all US military personnel with no medical experience to familiarize them with TCCC concepts and lifesaving skills to render basic medical aid to a trauma casualty. The course provides information through a short lecture followed by interactive hands-on skills training and discussion. The ASM TCCC course encompasses rapid casualty assessment, lifesaving medical skills, and critical communication and medical documentation techniques.
  
• Combat Lifesaver: TCCC Combat Lifesaver (TCCC CLS) is a 40-hour course for non-medical military personnel being deployed into combat (NAEMT, 2024). This course provides the means to help familiarize the student with TCCC concepts and lifesaving skills to render medical aid to a trauma casualty (Deployed Medicine, 2023). Following a short lecture, information is provided through interactive hands-on skills training and formal assessment. The CLS TCCC course encompasses tactical trauma assessment, bleeding control interventions, airway and respiratory management techniques, rescue drag and carry techniques, prevention and treatment of shock, burns, eye injuries, splints, pain management, critical communication, and medical documentation practices. At the successful completion of the course, students will be qualified and a TCCC basic proficiency level. The TCCC CLS course replaces the TCCC for All Combatants (TCCC-AC) course.
• Combat Medic / Corpsman: TCCC Combat Medic/Corpsman (TCCC CMC) is a 63-hour course for combat medics, corpsmen, pararescue personnel, and other military medical personnel being deployed into combat (NAEMT, 2024). This course is intended to train participants to provide more advanced prehospital casualty care than is taught in the ASM or CLS courses. Instruction includes the use of advanced medical equipment and knowledge in the management of life-threatening injuries commonly encountered on the battlefield by providing them with extensive medical knowledge and skills to manage complex injuries including advanced airway management and surgical interventions. The TCCC-CMC course replaces the TCCC-MP course.
• Combat Paramedic / Provider: TCCC Combat Paramedic/Provider (TCCC CPP) is a 64-hour course which is considered the highest level of tactical combat training by equipping medical personnel with advanced skills comparable to a civilian paramedic, allowing them to perform complex procedures like advanced life support in a combat environment. The course provides information through short presentations followed by interactive hands-on skills training and formal assessment (CoTCCC, 2023). The CPP TCCC Course encompasses Tactical Trauma Assessment (TTA), massive hemorrhage control interventions, airway and respiratory management techniques, shock recognition and management, burns, head injuries, hemorrhagic shock fluid resuscitation, pain management, antibiotic administration, critical communication, and medical documentation practices. This course teaches evidence-based, lifesaving techniques and strategies for providing the best trauma care on the battlefield. At the completion of this course, you will be qualified at an advanced TCCC proficiency level.
