Steps:
Take BSI precautions.
Explain the procedure to the patient (if conscious).
Direct manual stabilization of the injured leg.
Assess CMS.
Expose the affected area.
Place the splint beside the uninjured limb, adjust the splint to the proper length, and prepare the straps.
Support the injured limb while your partner fastens the ankle hitch about the foot and ankle.
Continue to support the limb as your partner applies gentle traction to the ankle hitch and foot.
Slide the splint into position under the injured limb.
Pad the groin and fasten the strap around the midthigh.
Connect the loops of the ankle hitch to the end of the splint while your partner continues to maintain traction. Fasten the support straps to hold the limb securely in the splint.
Reassess CMS.
Verbalize securing the torso to the long board to immobilize the hip.
Verbalize securing the splint to the long board to prevent movement of the splint.
Accepts evaluation and criticism professionally.
Shows willingness to learn/asks appropriate questions.
Interacts with simulated patient and other personnel in a professional manner (ie, uses appropriate name, explains procedures, maintains modesty, is courteous to crew, etc).
Passing criteria:
Pass: At least 70% (? of ?) successfully completed above. Currently at 0% completed.
Fail.
Did not explain and reassure the patient to allow informed consent.
Loses traction at any point after it is assumed.
Fails to assess motor, sensory, and distal circulation before applying manual traction.
Fails to reassess motor, sensory, and distal circulation after splinting.
Excessively rotates or extends the foot after splinting.
Fails to secure ischial strap before applying mechanical traction.
Fails to support the femur or prevent rotation of the injured leg with final immobilization.
