Steps:
Take or verbalize infection control precautions.
Explain the procedure to the patient (if conscious).
Prepare the site (either the side or tip of a finger):
Place the hand in the dependent position for 10–15 seconds.
Grasp the finger of the nondominant hand to be used.
Cleanse the site using aseptic technique and allow it to dry.
Puncture the site with an appropriate safety lancet.
Dispose of the lancet in an appropriate sharps container.
Squeeze the finger to obtain a drop of blood.
Lightly touch the drop of blood to a test strip, completely covering the test zone(s).
Wipe the blood from the finger with sterile gauze.
Apply pressure until the bleeding stops.
Apply a sterile adhesive dressing.
Read the blood glucose analysis from the machine and record it appropriately (normal range 80–120 mg/dL).
Dispose of the test strip in an appropriate biologic waste/sharps container.
Reassess the patient for any adverse reactions (swelling, irritation, etc).
Accepts evaluation and criticism professionally.
Shows willingness to learn/ask appropriate questions.
Interacts with simulated patient and other personnel in a professional manner (ie, uses appropriate name, explains procedures, maintains modesty, is courteous to crew, etc).
Passing criteria:
Pass: At least 70% (? of ?) successfully completed above. Currently at 0% completed.
Fail.
Fails to take or verbalize infection control precautions prior to performing procedure.
Did not explain and reassure the patient to allow informed consent.
Selects inappropriate site.
Contaminates site or equipment without appropriately correcting the situation.
Fails to dispose of equipment in a safe or appropriate manner.
