Adult CPR Steps:
Take BSI precautions.
Checks responsiveness, breathing, and pulse. This should take no more than 10 seconds.
Shouts for help or activates emergency response.
Perform 30 chest compressions with correct hand placement, rate, depth, and recoil.
Open the airway using the head tilt–chin lift or jaw-thrust maneuver and gives two breaths over 1 second with chest rise.
Continue cycles of 30 compressions and two rescue breaths until an AED arrives, care is assumed by other providers, or the patient starts to move with pauses in care lasting no more than 10 seconds.
AED Steps:
Turn on the AED. Apply the adhesive pads and connect them to the AED. Press the analyze button. If your AED has voice prompts, follow the verbal instructions. Do not touch the patient. Allow the AED to analyze the rhythm.
If a shock is advised, press the button to defibrillate the patient. If no shock is advised, perform five cycles of CPR.
As soon as the shock is delivered, begin CPR starting with chest compressions. Perform five cycles of CPR (about 2 minutes). After 2 minutes of CPR, go back to reanalyze the cardiac rhythm.
Infant CPR Steps:
Take BSI precautions.
Position the infant on a firm surface and establish the infant’s level of responsiveness. If the infant has no pulse and is not breathing or only gasping, begin chest compressions using two middle fingers in the middle of the chest just below the nipple line. Compress the chest at least one-third the depth of the chest (about 1.5 inches [4 cm]) at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute.
Open the airway to a neutral or slight sniffing position using the head tilt-chin lift maneuver. Give two slow breaths (1 second per breath) and watch for chest rise.
Continue cycles of 30 chest compressions and two rescue breaths until the infant moves or until other EMS providers arrive to take over the care of the patient.
If you are by yourself with no communications device, perform 2 minutes of CPR before leaving the victim to activate the EMS system.
