Confirm the Six Rights of Medication Administration:
patient,
drug,
dose,
route,
time,
documentation.
Place the correct medication dose into the nebulizer cup and reattach the lid.
Attach the mouthpiece and extension tubing or mask to the nebulizer cup.
Attach the nebulizer tubing to oxygen and run at 6–8 L/min until the medication begins to mist.
Remove the nonrebreathing mask or nasal cannula from the patient’s face and place the nebulizer mask on the patient or direct the patient to bite on the mouthpiece and firmly hold onto the nebulizer. Note: If the patient requires a bag-mask device or CPAP, use an in-line adapter and a secondary oxygen source to provide nebulized medications while providing ventilations or CPAP.
Direct the patient to breathe deeply through the mouth.
Resume oxygen administration after medication administration is complete.
Document medication administration.
Reassess the patient for desired effects/adverse side effects.
Dispose of all equipment properly.
Accepts evaluation and criticism professionally.
Shows willingness to learn/asks appropriate questions.
Interacts with simulated patient and other personnel in a professional manner (ie, uses appropriate name, explains procedures, maintains modesty, is courteous to crew, etc).
Passing criteria:
Pass: At least 70% (? of ?) successfully completed above. Currently at 0% completed.
Fail.
Fails to take BSI precautions prior to performing procedure.
Did not explain and reassure the patient to allow informed consent.
Fails to ascertain any drug allergies prior to medication administration.
Administers an improper medication or dosage (wrong medication, incorrect amount, or at an inappropriate rate).
Fails to observe the patient for desired effects and adverse side effects after administering medication.
Fails to ensure that patient is being oxygenated/ventilated during assembly of the nebulizer.
Fails to ascertain the six patient medication administration rights prior to administration.
