Steps:
Take BSI precautions.
Assess airway and ventilation.
Explain the procedure to the patient if conscious and attach to an ECG (if reasonable).
Attach the hard catheter to the suction tubing.
Measure the catheter for maximum depth (corner of mouth to earlobe); the hard catheter may or may not have a thumb port air vent.
Turn on the suction machine and insert the catheter into the back of the pharynx without applying suction.
Place your thumb over the air vent to begin suctioning; suction in a circular motion for a maximum of 15 seconds (extended suctioning may lead to hypoxia).
Irrigate the suction catheter with normal saline.
Repeat suction procedure as needed.
Reassess airway and ventilation.
Dispose of all equipment properly.
Accepts evaluation and criticism professionally.
Shows willingness to learn or asks appropriate questions.
Interacts with simulated patient and other personnel in a professional manner (ie, uses appropriate name, explains procedures, maintains modesty, is courteous to crew, etc).
Passing criteria:
Pass: At least 70% (? of ?) successfully completed above. Currently at 0% completed.
Fail.
Fails to take BSI precautions prior to performing procedure.
Fails to dispose of equipment/supplies in an approved manner.
