Steps:
Take BSI precautions.
Open the airway: head tilt–chin lift or jaw-thrust maneuver.
Choose an appropriate-size OPA. Measure from angle of jaw to level of incisors, or Measure from earlobe to corner of mouth, or Use resuscitation tape for pediatric patients.
Insert the airway correctly. Point the tip toward the roof of the mouth until the flange reaches the lips and gently rotate 180o, or Point the tip toward the corner of the mouth and rotate 90o along the curve of the oropharynx, or Depress the tongue and place the airway into the mouth without rotations until the flange reaches the lips (for pediatric patients).
Ensure the patient’s airway remains open and reassess ventilation.
Dispose of all equipment properly.
Accepts evaluation and criticism professionally.
Shows willingness to learn or asks appropriate questions.
Interacts with simulated patient and other personnel in a professional manner (ie, uses appropriate name, explains procedures, maintains modesty, is courteous to crew, etc).
Passing criteria:
Pass: At least 70% (? of ?) successfully completed above. Currently at 0% completed.
Fail.
Fails to take BSI precautions prior to performing procedure.
Selects inappropriate-size airway (too large or too small).
Fails to insert airway after a maximum of three attempts.
Fails to reassess airway after insertion and/or to maintain patent airway.
