Steps:
Take BSI precautions.
Open the airway: head tilt–chin lift or jaw-thrust maneuver.
Choose appropriate-size NPA: measure from the tip of nose to tragus of ear (length) and outside diameter of tube equal to patient’s little finger (diameter).
Lubricate the NPA.
Insert with the bevel toward the septum. OR IF LEFT: Insert the airway with the bevel toward the septum.
Advance the tip directed along the floor of the nasal cavity. IF LEFT: Rotate the tube 180o after inserting it approximately 1 inch.
Continue until the flange is seated against the outside of the nostril or until resistance is met.
Ensure the patient’s airway remains open and reassess ventilation.
Dispose of all equipment properly.
Accepts evaluation and criticism professionally.
Shows willingness to learn or asks appropriate questions.
Interacts with simulated patient and other personnel in a professional manner (ie, uses appropriate name, explains procedures, maintains modesty, is courteous to crew, etc).
Passing criteria:
Pass: At least 70% (? of ?) successfully completed above. Currently at 0% completed.
Fail.
Fails to take BSI precautions prior to performing procedure.
> Selects inappropriate-size airway (too large or too small.
> Fails to insert airway after a maximum of three attempts.
> Fails to reassess airway after insertion and/or to maintain patent airway.
