Raven EMS Education Program Manual
Section 1.81 - Land Acknowledgement

Catawba

Lumbee

Tuscarora

Many of Raven Medical’s facilities and courses are located on the traditional lands of the Catawba (People of the River), Lumbee (People of the Dark Water), and Tuscarora nations. The purpose of this section is to encourage all staff, faculty, and students to acknowledge the First Peoples on whose traditional territories we live, work, and learn.

Warriors from these nations were the fiercest in the land and some tribes aligned with American patriots during the revolutionary war. Traditional medicine of these first people included herbal remedies of roots, bark, and leaves to treat a variety of illnesses and injuries. One example includes Willow bark that contains salicin (precursor to Aspirin) that was used to treat pain and inflammation.
